Feldenkrais session by Yael Davids

Béatrice Balcou invites Yael Davids to give a Feldenkrais lesson in the exhibition.

The Feldenkrais Method is a system of body movement that aimed at improving human functioning by increasing self-awareness through movement.

Biography

Yael Davids (1968) is a visual artist, teacher, Feldenkrais instructor and community facilitator. Her practice is grounded in long-term engagement with site-specific contexts where cultural production, pedagogical exchange and communal life are defining, often interlocking elements. Within these contexts—museums, cultural hubs, institutions of education—Davids is keenly interested in dynamics of agency, mutuality, and constellations of interdependence. Intersecting sculptural sensibilities with her formal training in the Feldenkrais Method, Davids’ projects contemplate the capacities by which bodies operate as a documentary vessels: the body as a registry of the present—intrinsically connected to collective heritage and political narratives—and simultaneously a receptacle wherein a private biography is compiled, contouring a finite, unique voice. Davids’ artworks manifest as lyrical assemblages that articulate a layering of spatial, somatic and affective grammars; these include installations, performances, and works on paper.
From 2017 to 2020 Davids was a candidate of the Creator Doctus pilot program, a project developed at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie that seeks to realise a new European third cycle award for higher arts education. Within this framework, Davids pursued a practice-based research trajectory in collaboration with the Van Abbemuseum, centrally examining learning conditions in the museum setting. The research developed through a series of somatic encounters with the museum’s collection, facilitated by Davids in the form of Feldenkrais lessons. Since 2023 Yael is also the chair of Plan C, a community centre in Amsterdam’s Diamantbuurt. Here she supports grassroots organising, with an emphasis on activities that support communal welfare, low-threshold education and sustainability.

Davids studied visual arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, sculpture at the Pratt Institute in New York and choreography and dance education at the Remscheid Akademie in Remscheid. Education for Feldenkrais practitioner she achieved at International Feldenkrais training edcuation, Neve-Shalom, Istituto di formazione Feldenkrais, Feldenkrais - Awareness Through Movement, Milano.Amsterdam International Feldenkrais® Teacher Training.
